Extended Area Low Temperature Blackbody

Extended Temperature

The SBIR Infinity EXLT Series Extended Area Low-Temperature Blackbody Source is designed for applications where temperatures below the 0°C limit of standard blackbodies must be generated. This blackbody system can achieve temperatures as low as -40°C in an uncontrolled lab environment. For applications such as low-background flood mode testing of detectors, the Model EXLT can eliminate the need for expensive and cumbersome temperature chambers or other special provisions to achieve these cold backgrounds.

A recirculating refrigerated bath cools the blackbody to approximately the desired temperature using a proprietary fluid. Then a sophisticated electronic control system and an array of thermoelectric coolers control the blackbody surface precisely at the desired setpoint. The EXLT Series includes all of the components needed for operation: blackbody, refrigerated bath, temperature controller, cables, and hoses. Operation of the system is straightforward, and maintenance is minimal.

A key feature is the new iProbe from SBIR. This intelligent temperature sensor is calibrated independently of the blackbody system. To re-calibrate the system you need only exchange the probe with a recently calibrated one. No special equipment is required thus minimizing downtime. Additionally, an optional new ultra-black surface coating -VANTABlack®-S - can be applied to the source plate providing unprecedented emissivity on a flat plate blackbody system.

The EXLT is a low cost, easy-to-use solution for applications requiring a low temperature blackbody source.

  • Extended Temperature Range
The EXLT Series has a standard temperature range of -40ºC to +100ºC. An optional range of -40ºC to +175ºC.
  • Absolute Temperature Control
The absolute temperature of the blackbody may be set directly, or the blackbody temperature may be set relative to the temperature of an optional external iProbe sensor. See automatic radiometric compensation under the options tab for more information.
  • Dry Gas Purge
When a blackbody is operated below the dew point, condensation can be a problem. To address this issue, the front plate of the blackbody includes a mounting feature so that the volume between the blackbody and the Unit Under Test can be enclosed with a customer supplied shroud and purged with dry gas. Alternately, instead of a shroud, the mounting feature can be used to install an IR window in front of the exit aperture of the blackbody. A gas fitting on the rear plate of the blackbody is provided as a convenient way to route the dry gas into the sealed system.
  • i-probeIntelli-Probe (iProbe)
The iProbe is an intelligent temperature sensor that is calibrated independently of the blackbody system. To re-calibrate the system you need only exchange the probe with a recently calibrated one. No special equipment is required thus minimizing downtime.
  • Accuracy
Ultra-stable, highly responsive iProbes are used to provide very precise control and accurate system performance. The iProbes are calibrated to an accuracy of 0.010ºC. System uncertainty including calibration and stability is +/- 0.01ºC or +/- 0.1% of set delta T whichever is greater.
  • Uniformity
The Infinity blackbody incorporates design and construction features that maximize spatial uniformity and minimize convection influences resulting in typical surface uniformity of > 98% of set differential temperature or 0.010ºC, whichever is greater over 90% of the emitting surface area.
  • Emissivity
    A surface treatment is used to create a spectrally flat emissivity of > 0.970 (3µm to 5.5µm), > 0.950 (8µm to 14µm).
  • LabVIEW Driver Support
SBIR Infinity blackbodies and integrating spheres can be easily incorporated into your LabVIEW application routines.
  • Milli-Kelvin Temperature Stability
SBIR has developed unique temperature measurement and analog-to-digital conversion circuitry with integrated control logic that results in extremely responsive temperature control. True set point and precise milli-kelvin control have been achieved allowing for precision testing at contrast levels of 1 milli-kelvin.
  • Multi-Function Controller
The 19" 2U rack mountable controller features a touch screen display and supports remote computer control over Ethernet or RS-232. The controllers are also available with an optional IEEE 488 Interface.

The controller will also operate all of the SBIR peripherals: target wheels, visible illuminators, pulsed laser diodes, range slides, source slides and filter wheels.

  • Automatic Radiometric Compensation (Optional Upgrade)
Attenuation caused by optics, differences in emissivity, ambient temperature change, and waveband of interest may result in reduced radiometric accuracy. When operating the controller in the radiometric mode, compensation for these factors is automatically applied, adjusting the blackbody as required to produce the correct radiometric output. This option includes a probe block and temperature sensor for accurate ambient temperature measurement.
  • IRWindows™4 Advanced E-O Test and Analysis Tool (Optional Upgrade)
The Infinity Series is optimized for seamless integration with the SBIR's IRWindows™4 test system. IRWindows™4 is an advanced software tool that automates the setup, execution, data collection and results analysis for industry standard performance testing of infrared, visible and laser sensor systems.
  • Configurations
The Infinity EXLT Series blackbody system includes a temperature controller (19” rack mount or desktop configuration), blackbody head, interconnect cable, power cable and manual. The blackbody heads are available with emitting surface sizes including 4” or 8” square. Standard and optional temperature ranges can be viewed in the Specifications section.
  • VANTABlack®-S High Emissivity Infinity EXLT Series Blackbody Pic

An optional coating utilizing VANTABlack®-S can be applied to the source plate providing unprecedented blackbody emissivity in both the MWIR and LWIR. MWIR emissivity is greater than 99.8% +/-0.1% and LWIR emissivity is greater than 99.5% +/-0.15%. SBIR now offers the VANTABlack coating on blackbody applications worldwide under an exclusive licensing agreement with the manufacturer of this exciting proprietary treatment.

  • Communication

All Infinity systems come with ethernet communication. In addition, IEEE-488(GPIB) and RS-232 communication channels are also included for remote computer control of all blackbody, calibration, illuminator and target wheel functions.

  • Radiometric Temperature
Radiometric differential temperature accuracy is enhanced with this feature by accounting for error due to optical attenuation background temperature differences and non-unity emissivity. This option includes a probe block and temperature sensor for accurate ambient temperature measurement.

  • Rack Mounting
The blackbody controller is designed for bench-top or standard 19 inch rack use. Rack mounting ears come standard with the instrument. A rack slide kit is also available.
  • IRWindows™4 Advanced E-O Test and Analysis Tool
The Infinity Series is also optimized for seamless integration with the SBIR's IRWindows™4 test system. IRWindows™4 is an advanced software tool that automates the setup, execution, data collection and results analysis for industry standard performance testing of infrared, visible and laser sensor systems.
